3rd National Conference on Lesser-Known Species of Madhya Pradesh

The 3rd National Conference on Lesser-Known Species of Madhya Pradesh concluded today in Bhopal after two days (17 & 18th Jan) of insightful discussions and collaborative efforts aimed at conserving lesser-known wildlife species and landscapes and last day of
field visit on 19th to gain field experience.
Organised by SNHC India and the MP Biodiversity Board, the conference attracted over1,300 participants online and offline, including renowned experts, government officials,
researchers, policymakers, people in conservation and community leaders from across India and abroad.
The conference featured plenary lectures, panel discussions, and technical workshops, focusing on key areas such as:
Research and conservation of lesser-known wildlife species:

Highlighting the importance of neglected species in ecosystem health and sharing best practices for their protection.
Citizen science in conservation: Showcasing the transformative role of citizen scientists in monitoring and conserving species, particularly in landscapes shared with human activity.
Managing wildlife outside protected areas:

Exploring innovative and collaborative approaches to address conservation challenges beyond traditional reserves.
Aquatic biodiversity conservation: Stressing the urgency of increased research and action to protect streams and wetland ecosystems, which face significant threats.
Community engagement: Emphasising the importance of involving local communities in conservation planning and implementation for sustainable outcomes.
The conference was inaugurated by Mr J N Kansotiya, IAS alongwith Dr Suhas Kumar Retd IFS, Mr Jasbir Singh Chauhan Retd IFS and Mr R Sreenivasa Murthy Retd IFS
The renowned subject experts like Dr Anish Andheria, Dr Sameer kumar Sinha, Devcharan Jathanna, Shubhalaxmi V, Dr Yogesh Dubey, Ms Parveen Shaikh, Mr I P Bopanna, Dr
Arunima Singh etc along with young researchers fueled the event.
A highlight of the event was the launch of a new calendar featuring the lesser-known species of Madhya Pradesh and now the upcoming 4th conference will be with more broader and more scientific approach that is on Central Indian Landscape moving out of state boundaries in respect of subject.
The conference underscored the critical role of lesser-known species and habitats outside Sanctuaries and National Parks in maintaining ecosystem balance, the need for urgent attention to aquatic biodiversity, and the importance of engaging communities and citizen science in conservation efforts. Participants expressed enthusiasm for continuing collaboration and innovation in these areas.
The event was also supported by MP Forest Department, Wildlife Trust of India, MP Tourism, Jehannuma Wilderness, Wildlife Conservation Trust, National Biodiversity Authority and
other esteemed conservation entities.
