The Malayalam feature film A Pregnant Widow marked a significant milestone for its makers as it was screened at the International Bengaluru Film Festival. The screening was met with a warm response from audiences, with the film’s team expressing deep gratitude for the opportunity to present their work on an international platform.
Directed by Unni KR, A Pregnant Widow is a socially driven narrative that follows the journey of a seven-months-pregnant woman grappling with systemic injustice after the death of her husband. The film highlights themes of racism, caste discrimination, and institutional apathy, placing the spotlight on an individual’s struggle against an unyielding system.
Speaking at the festival, director Unni KR described the screening as a “powerful moment” for the team. He explained that the story revolves around a woman whose husband, a government employee, dies after facing sustained discrimination based on colour, caste, and social identity. Left alone and pregnant, the protagonist’s journey unfolds as she fights to prove her marital status through official documentation in order to secure employment and government benefits. Unni KR clarified that the film does not position itself against the government but instead questions the rigid systems that often fail vulnerable individuals. “The fight is against the system and the paperwork that denies dignity,” he said.
He also noted that the film has been screened at several other international platforms, including festivals in Kolkata, Pune, Chennai, and Sri Lanka, and has received encouraging responses wherever it has been shown.
Lead actress Twinkle Joby shared her pride in being part of the Bengaluru screening. Thanking the director and the entire crew, she said the role was one of the most powerful characters she has portrayed. “I’m very thankful to Unni KR for trusting me with this character, and to the DOP and the entire team for their support,” she said. Twinkle Joby added that the feedback she has received from audiences across festivals has been overwhelmingly positive. Viewers, she said, have appreciated the natural and realistic portrayal of her character, which has been especially rewarding for her as an actor.
