SPARSH Hospital, RR Nagar organized a 5 kilometer “Run for Healthy Kidney” run bringing together more than 7000 participants on Sunday morning to mark the World Kidney Day and raise awareness regarding the significance of kidney health and preventive care.
The early morning run witnessed participation from healthcare professionals, fitness enthusiasts, students and families, reflecting increasing engagement of public around preventive health and life related diseases. Doctors also highlighted that sedentary lifestyles, hypertension, diabetes and obesity remain among the leading contributors to chronic kidney disease in India, automatically making awareness and early prevention very much crucial.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sharan Shivaraj Patil, Chairman and Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, SPARSH Group of Hospitals, said “India is facing a growing epidemic of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which are also among the leading contributors to chronic kidney disease. Addressing this challenge requires greater awareness, early detection, and collective community action. Initiatives like this run are an important reminder that improving public health begins with informed citizens and a shared commitment to healthier living”.
Experts and consultants from the hospital also engaged with the participants and shared insights on the preventive kidney care. The medical team included Dr. Sunil R, Consultant – Nephrology; Dr. Bhavya R, Consultant – Nephrology; Dr. Santhosh S, Consultant – Nephrology; and Dr. Sharath C. T., Consultant – Urology, who interacted with the attendees and highlighted the significance of hydration, balanced amount of nutrition, regular exercise and routine medical checkups in maintaining health of kidney.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sandeep R M – Chief operating officer, SPARSH Hospital, RR Nagar, added, “Regular physical activity plays a vital role in maintaining kidney health. Activities such as running improve cardiovascular fitness, regulate blood pressure, support weight management, and enhance insulin sensitivity—factors that significantly influence kidney function. Through this initiative, we aim to encourage people to integrate simple lifestyle changes that can help reduce the risk of kidney disease.”
Experts also noted that exercise such as running not only strengthens the cardiovascular health but also helps to manage the blood pressure, reduce inflammation and support metabolic balance, all of which are closely associated to functioning of kidney.
By bringing together the community for a common cause, the initiative aimed to reinforce the message that small changes in lifestyle can play a significant role in preventing kidney disease and improving the long-term health outcomes.
The awareness run was made possible with the valued support and participation of partners including Alkem, Anthem BioPharma, NephroPlus, Adley Oncology, Crossathlon, RR Nagar Runnaddicts, and Acharya Yoga Youth Club, whose collaboration helped strengthen the community-driven initiative. Their involvement contributed to amplifying the message of preventive kidney care and healthy living. By bringing together healthcare experts, fitness communities, and citizens, the initiative reinforced the importance of collective action in promoting kidney health and encouraging lifestyle choices that can help prevent kidney disease in the long run
