Canada partnered with the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2017 was the ‘Country of Focus’ for the 48th edition of the event. The Government of Canada had joined forces with Telefilm Canada and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to lead a delegation of prominent Canadian film makers and personalities to Goa.
Country of Focus ” Canada” at IFFI 2017 was the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award to well-known Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan. also Canada is organised a series of activities including a ‘Workshop on Co-production’, a masterclass with Atom Egoyan, a booth at the Film Bazaar to promote business-to-business networking opportunities for Indian and Canadian film companies, and a Canada pavilion with interactive activities at the festival venue.
At The press conference organised at 2 day of the IFFI 2017 Canadian delegation led by Jordan Reeves, Consul General for Canada in Mumbai
, Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director – TIFF , April Mullen, Actress & filmmaker , Johnny Ma, Director was present.
His excellency Jordan reeves was particular about more co-productions should happen between Canada & India film houses as treaty was signed in the year 2014 also stated Bollywood Super Star ” Akshay Kumar ” , Film maker Deepa Mehta are torch bearer between 2 countries.
With Involving in events like FICCI-Frames and now IFFI 2017 he was hopeful of bridging the gap.
Also mentioned though Canada is not so big as US [ Hollywood ] in terms of production, its films are good in content and looking forward some Theatrical releases of same in India with support also Canada has beautiful locations & landscapes and welcomed Indian film makers to shoot there.
Cameron Bailey film critic & artistic director of TIFF also stated that actress Priyanka Chopra,film Maker Anurag Kashyap are well know faces from India cinema at Toronto International Film festival also leading delegations from this side.
Inputs from our end Anubhav Sinha’s year 2001 sleeper hit ” Tum Bin” was shot in Canada post that not many film makers attempted to shoot there but hopefully now with Arjun Kapoor & Parineeti Chopra starer ” Namastey Canada” which tentatively to be shot fully in Canada and to be released in year 2018 or early 2019 may change the scenario.
Also would like to add Canadian team to look Indian film production houses beyond Mumbai [ Bollywood ] especially South India where more than 60% of films produced of India also “Bengaluru” silicon valley of India has more collaborations with ” Vancouver ” in field of Animation and Special Effects [ VFX] Industries Studios.
