Hon’ble Minister for Large and Medium Industries & Infrastructure Development, Shri M.B. Patil, today chaired a high-level roundtable with leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to strengthen Karnataka’s position as a major hub for global pharma manufacturing, exports, and innovation. The session focused on shaping the future of India’s pharmaceutical industry and accelerating Karnataka’s emergence as a preferred destination for manufacturing and investment.
The discussion highlighted Karnataka’s strong competitive advantages, including world-class infrastructure, a deep pool of skilled scientific talent, progressive industrial policies, and a mature innovation ecosystem that integrates pharma, biotech, and advanced technologies. Karnataka offers a unique value proposition for companies looking to expand or diversify their manufacturing and R&D operations, with a clear emphasis on enabling large-scale, globally competitive production capabilities.
The state underscored its leadership in biotechnology, hosting 60% of India’s biotech companies and contributing 33% of the country’s biotech exports. Karnataka has attracted 80% of India’s greenfield FDI in biotech in recent years and supports a thriving community of 1,000+ biotech startups, making it one of Asia’s most dynamic biotech clusters. Bio-industrials and bio-agri sectors are also witnessing steady growth, adding new dimensions to the state’s bioeconomy.
The roundtable also showcased the growing synergy between pharma, biotech, and Karnataka’s strong technology and AI ecosystem. The state is at the forefront of advancements in genomics, synthetic biology, and bioinformatics, supported by the fact that 45% of India’s GenAI startups are based in Bengaluru. This cross-sectoral integration positions Karnataka to lead India’s next wave of innovation-driven growth in life sciences.
Industry leaders expressed strong confidence in Karnataka’s vision and welcomed the government’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure, streamlining approvals, and expanding cluster-based development. Their inputs will help shape upcoming policy enhancements and initiatives aimed at building a world-class, globally aligned pharma and biotech ecosystem.
The roundtable is part of the Government of Karnataka’s broader strategy to reinforce the state’s leadership in life sciences and accelerate investments in manufacturing, R&D, biologics, medtech, and emerging biotech sectors.
