IISc Bangalore and Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education Sign MoU to Launch Multidisciplinary Joint Ph.D. Programs

The Ministry of Education of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in higher education, research, and capacity building. The partnership aims to enhance academic excellence and research innovation through Mulidisciplinary joint Ph.D programs in science, engineering, technology, and related disciplines. Key areas of collaboration include faculty and student exchange, joint research projects, curriculum development, postgraduate training, and knowledge sharing in emerging and strategic fields.

Speaking at the mou Exchange ceremony, Prof.Dr.Krishnaraj Ramaswamy- Multidisciplinary Joint Ph.D Programs Coordinator, Ministry of Education, Ethiopia stated that the collaboration aligns with Ethiopia’s national higher education reform agenda and its commitment to building a knowledge-based economy. “This partnership with IISc, one of the world’s leading research institutions, will significantly contribute to strengthening Ethiopia’s human capital and research capacity,” Prof.Krishnaraj Ramaswamy said.

Representing IISc Bangalore, Prof. Ramray Bhat, Chair,Office of International Relations IISC Bangalore, highlighted the institute’s commitment to global academic partnerships. “We are pleased to collaborate with the Ministry of Education of Ethiopia to promote high-quality research, innovation, and advanced training. This MoU reflects our shared vision of addressing global and regional challenges through science and technology,” he noted. Under the agreement, both parties will work closely to identify priority areas for collaboration, facilitate institutional linkages between 47 Ethiopian universities and IISc, and promote joint initiatives that support sustainable development and technological advancement. The MoU marks an important milestone in strengthening educational and scientific cooperation between Ethiopia and India and is expected to contribute to long-term academic and socio-economic development in both countries.
