National Workshop on Reuse of Treated Wastewater by NITI Aayog & Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB)

NITI Aayog, in collaboration with the Government of Karnataka and the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), is organized a two-day National Workshop on the Reuse of Treated Wastewater on 6–7 November 2025 in Bengaluru.

The Plenary Session was graced by Dr. Vinod K. Paul, Member, NITI Aayog; Dr. Shalini Rajneesh, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka; Shri Tushar Giri Nath, Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development Department, Government of Karnataka; Smt. D. Thara, Additional Secretary and Mission Director, AMRUT; Shri Maheshwar Rao, Chief Commissioner, Greater Bengaluru Authority; Shri Yugal Joshi, Programme Director, NITI Aayog; and Dr. V. Ram Prasath Manohar, Chairman, BWSSB.

Dr. Paul commended the Government of Karnataka’s efforts and highlighted the transformative potential of used water reuse as a key driver towards Viksit Bharat 2047. He emphasized the need for robust state-level policies, clear standards for different applications, and integration of reuse practices into emerging high-demand sectors such as data centers, while also addressing health considerations and promoting behavioral change for sustainable water management.

Dr. Shalini Rajneesh outlined Karnataka’s pioneering initiatives following the 2024 water crisis in Bengaluru, including lake rejuvenation and industrial reuse of treated wastewater. She urged participants to suggest innovative and strategic measures to enhance the State’s reuse potential.

Smt. D. Thara emphasized the need for grid infrastructure, quality monitoring mechanisms, and capacity building within utilities to ensure effective implementation.

Shri Tushar Giri Nath stressed the importance of adopting cost-effective treatment technologies and sustainable strategies to strengthen the operation and maintenance of decentralized treatment systems. The workshop aims to chart a comprehensive strategy and actionable roadmap for expanding treated wastewater reuse nationwide, with NITI Aayog serving as a collaborative platform for knowledge exchange and the development of replicable models for States and stakeholders
