Priyank Kharge, Minister for Electronics, IT/BT and Rural Development & Panchayat Raj, Government of Karnataka spoke at Confederation of Indian Industry’s Research & Development Conclave 2025 in Bengaluru that our R&D ecosystem, though still maturing, is gaining remarkable momentum. We’re currently the 3rd largest producer of scientific publications globally. Our annual patent filings have quadrupled, reaching nearly 100,000 last year.

And with over 40,000 PhD graduates annually, India has one of the largest and youngest talent pools anywhere in the world. Despite this impressive progress, our R&D investment as a share of GDP remains modest which is hovering around 0.64%, compared to 2.4% in China or 3.5% in the US. But there is a shift underway.

The India Engineering R&D services market is projected at $133.7 billion in 2025, rising to about $218 billion by 2030— growing at 10.3%  Bengaluru alone accounts for Over 40% of India’s R&D workforce Hyderabad and Pune together contribute ~26 % Delhi‑NCR accounts for ~13 % of the talent pool. We are not only building the tech of tomorrow, but we are building the talent to drive it.
