An Indo-French co-production by Saregama India Ltd, UFO Production, and O28 Films, AGRA marks the comeback of Rahul Roy, the original Aashiqui star, and introduces Mohit Agarwal in the lead role. The cast also includes Priyanka Bose, Ruhani Sharma, Vibha Chibber, Sonal Jha and Aanchal Goswami.
Written by Kanu Behl and Atika Chohan, Agra explores themes of love, desire, and isolation within the confines of a small-town home — a bold, intimate look at human relationships and the spaces we inhabit.
Richa Chadha, talking about the film said, “Agra is a very unique film. It reflects to the aspirations of the middle class in urban India, especially in rapidly evolving smaller towns. It looks at the dream of owning a home and also explores repressed male sexuality through a fascinating lens, something many might relate to but rarely discuss. Kanu is incredibly brave with his storytelling, and hosting this screening is the very least I can do to show my appreciation. Kanu was the person who auditioned me for my first film and believed in me when others didn’t. He pushed for me in that audition room, and I will always be grateful to him. Supporting this film and his vision feels very personal.”
Ali Fazal said, “Kanu has always been a fearless storyteller, and Agra is proof of that. It’s rare to see a film that dives this deep into human complexity and still remains so tender. Hosting this screening felt important. When a film like this gets made, it deserves to be seen, discussed, and celebrated.”
Director Kanu Behl said, “Agra came from a very honest place, and we nurtured it carefully through workshops and festivals. To have Richa and Ali host a screening for the film is incredibly special. Their gesture reinforces the belief that raw, independent stories deserve space and support.”
Filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee said, “I am still processing the film, Kanu’s work always asks for time and reflection. The character that stayed with me the most was Guru. I kept trying to understand what was going on in his mind and, in a way, in Kanu’s as well. There’s a very clear link between how Kanu sees the world and how Guru experiences it, and that’s what makes the film so intriguing.”
Synopsis
Guru (25), a sexually repressed young boy, lives in a small house in Agra. He sleeps in the same room as his mother, and on the upper floor his father lives with a mistress. In an already tiny house, the only available space is the terrace on the upper floor. Guru insists that he loves Mala, an imaginary girl, and will marry her and live with her in a room on the terrace just like his father does with his mistress.
‘Agra’ then, becomes the odyssey of a young Indian man’s sexual coming of age as he goes from courting an imaginary girl; to sex chatting with an unknown girl online; to finally bedding a 40-year-old cripple woman and ‘falling in love with her’, ending up having sex with for the first time. As everyone else in the house fights for the terrace to be used for their own material gains, Guru struggles with his sexuality.
