Writer-director Ananyabrata Chakravorty’s debut feature Kaisi Ye Paheli to have its theatrical release across India on 28th November. The film had its World Premiere at the New York Indian Film Festival 2025 in the Competition Section and was nominated for Best Screenplay and Best Debut Film.
The film also was officially selected in Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2025 and is the Opening Film at the upcoming edition of Yellowstone International Film Festival in Mumbai. The film features an impressive cast. Sadhana Singh, remembered for her iconic debut film Nadiya Ke Paar, returns to the silver screen in a lead role after decades; Sukant Goel, known for his roles in Netflix originals like Kaala Paani, Ghost Stories, and Monica O My Darling, steps into his first feature film as the male lead; Rajit Kapur, 28 years after his iconic performance in Byomkesh Bakshi, makes a comeback as a Bengali detective; and Chittaranjan Giri, known for Farzi and Gulaal, portrays a character from the Northeast.
The film is produced by Take Pictures founded by Ananyabrata Chakravorty and Nishu Dikshit. Set in a small town in the hills of Northeast India, the film is a dark comedy and a unique murder mystery about a lonely mother’s endless pursuit to bond with her disrespectful son, Apart from writing and filmmaking, Ananyabrata also has acted in Varun Grover’s All India Rank, and plays an eminent freedom fighter in Ram Madhvani’s historical series The Waking of a Nation. Elated that the film is releasing in theatres, Ananyabrata Chakravorty says, “During the world premiere, I had the opportunity to watch the film with so many strangers at a theatre for the first time, and the way they enjoyed it – I was sure that our film belongs to the cinemas.
Now that it’s finally happening, I can’t wait for everyone to watch it, and accept it as their own.”Nishu Dikshit, the producer and co-founder of Take Pictures sharing her joy says “As a first-time producer of a crowdfunded indie film, seeing it reach the big screen feels surreal. We’re deeply grateful to the artists who believed in us and to every crowdfunder who backed our conviction. There was no clear path, so we carved our own. Reaching here has already exceeded our expectations.”Noted actor Rajit Kapur who will be seen in the character of a Bengali detective, 28 years after his iconic performance in Byomkesh Bakshi says, “It doesn’t happen often that a new film, an independent film, a first director gets a theatrical release, it’s very tough and I am really really happy that Kaisi Ye Paheli has found someone to back it in order to allow it a theatrical release. So it sounds good, feels great, and I’m looking forward to it.”Sukant Goel (Kaala Paani actor) who plays the lead in the film says, “It is a beautiful coming together of belief, effort and chance that our film is going to hit the screens. When you move into an indie project like this, it is based on your belief in the story and the people with the vision.
The effort happens as a fluid process where everyday is a beautiful battle to figure truth within the logistical possibilities at your disposal. And then the great and elusive gift that is chance! I am delighted, excited and nervous and very very proud of Ananyabrata and his team.”Director’s noteEveryone has a mother. There’s no other way to come into the world. While she is often seen as a symbol of love, care, and sacrifice – celebrated across all forms of literature – she is also someone who, at times, stands in the way of our privacy, independence, and identity in ways we rarely acknowledge or talk about. She is a paradox.
Through this film, I have tried to observe her more as a human being with basic, universal desires like love, care and respect, especially from the child to whom she gave something as precious as life itself.
