Q. Many teams have made a comeback after a difficult start in the IPL to eventually qualify for the playoffs, do you think you can accomplish a similar feat?
A. We have not discussed anything about the future. It is a cliche to avoid looking ahead, but that is the case. From our position midway through the tournament to the cricket we have played in recent games, especially the last few, it has been impressive to watch our group unite across all facets. Against Delhi Capitals, we ticked every box in a complete performance, which is what we are chasing. We are quietly confident in our skills and trajectory, giving us a strong chance to reach our goals. We are optimistic, knowing IPL history shows teams can reach the finals after slow starts. The key is continuing to deliver complete games like we did against DC.
Q. The batting has looked good for the last few matches now. The middle order is doing well too, what were some of the conversations that have brought about this improvement?
A. The conversations have been focused on continual learning from recent matches. It was always going to take time for everyone to find their role in the squad, given the turnover from last season via the auction. Now things have gelled nicely: our batting order is settled, and we better understand what works for our team. It has been great seeing players step up, like Finn Allen. I have worked with him for three years previously and I’m aware of his incredible skills. For him to dominate on a tough wicket last game wasn’t a surprise. He played freely and played at his best. Everyone now grasps their roles and is delivering when needed. Hopefully, that continues.
Q. Just wanted to in ask you about Cameron Green specifically. How has he handled the pressure that comes with the price tag, and can you tell us about some of your conversations with him?
A. High price tags are always challenging, and Cam has faced this in past IPL seasons, its nothing new for him. I am thrilled to work closely with him, as I anticipated. I love guiding him to unlock his best. He is settling into his roles, and he is focusing on his execution. It is an exciting journey for him as he hasn’t played a lot of T20 cricket, and I am fortunate to help accelerate this process too.
Q. Firstly, can you tell us about Finn Allen’s playing style? Secondly, I’d like to ask you about Angkrish Raghuvanshi, what do you think of his season so far?
A. Finn’s challenge is balancing his extraordinary ball striking against top bowlers in varied conditions while building consistency. Batters must stay free but calculated. His last innings was not his typical all-out attack from the first ball; he was measured before unleashing against specific bowlers in his batting zones. That is an exciting evolution for him and KKR, accessing his skills fearlessly at the right moments. I have loved working with him previously and now in the IPL, where he is realizing his dream with a significant impact on our batting.
When it comes to Angkrish, at 21, he has astonishing skills. We have seen flashes, and I’m sure the consistency will come too. He adapts to conditions and bowlers and has a huge range of shots in his arsenal. In a tough net session yesterday, he stood out where others struggled. He will keeps improving and he harnesses his skills, stays fresh, and excels in keeping too, a role he has worked hard at despite not being full time. Great keepers go unnoticed when performing well, and he certainly has done that. He is eager to learn, and that makes him a dream player for any coach.
Q. For the match against RCB, what’s your planning for Virat Kohli?
A. Every team has plans targeting Kohli’s perceived weaknesses, but he knows how to navigate these. However, we hope he plays an aggressive shot early, like he did in the last game. We must be sharp from the first ball regardless of who’s at the crease as we look to dominate proceedings throughout.
